Tourism Operators from Northland's West Coast Take it to Another Level (press notice)
Heading north from Auckland turn left onto the Twin Coast Discovery Highway and explore the Kauri Coast. Three operators from the Kaipara to Hokianga have combined forces to market Northland's West Coast in a new and unique way.
TRENZ 2010, NZ's largest tourism conference was the perfect platform to launch the Past, Present and Future concept, an initiative showcasing three kauri stories with a complimenting difference.
The award winning Kauri Museum is internationally famous for telling the fascinating stories that evolved from the mighty Kauri tree. The past industries of kauri timber and kauri gum were integral to the colonising of New Zealand providing early exports.
Footprints Waipoua provides a natural stage for an unforgettable present day encounter with some of the largest remaining kauri trees in the world. The signature four hour interactive night walk has featured in the 'Lonely Planet' publication Code Green as 1 of 2 New Zealand and 82 global 'Experiences of a Lifetime'.
The recent development of the Oranga Whenua reforestation project by Te Roroa (the local iwi of the Waipoua forest) provides visitors with an amazing opportunity to plant a kauri tree. GPS co-ordinates in conjunction with Google will enable you to monitor progress. The project aims are to protect, share and restore traditional lands back to its original state. This is one lifetime experience that future generations will benefit from and treasure.
For an extraordinary storytelling journey through culture, history and ecological treasures, Northland's West Coast is a destination not to be missed!
